Grasys Nitrogen Plants Run at OJSC Naftan, the Largest Belarusian Refinery

Grasys has designed and supplied the Naftan refinery with three high-profile membrane nitrogen plants for nitrogen production from atmosphere air featuring 2.400 m³/h in total capacity and 99.6% recovered gas purity. The supply was implemented as part of a large-scale technical upgrade in this company: another new facility is under erection being configured to the needs of DCU and free sulfur recovery unit based on the Claus process.

In the new nitrogen plant the product is provided from atmosphere air. It is the basic raw material. And the gas separation process will run in line with the most recent know-how for the industry — membrane technology. To this effect the least equipment will be used at the Naftan facility: a compressor unit, an air treatment unit and a gas separation unit. The solution which is advantageous from both technical and economic point of view will make it possible to reduce operating costs and improve the flow process efficiency.

— There are three basic gas separation methods: adsorption, cryogenic and membrane, says Sergey Senkov, Process Engineer engaged in air, nitrogen, inert gas supply facilities, Production Shop No. 7. — The first two are deployed in our process. And now the plant where membrane method will also be used is being constructed…. Launching the membrane plant process requires less energy. Imagine, the new nitrogen plant will have only one compressor for each unit. And, by way of example, a cryogenic plant requires much more energy-intensive equipment including air and nitrogen compressors, air purification units and water cooling system…

The automatic control system called Grasys Intelligent Control will be the brain of the process skids for the new nitrogen production plant. Thanks to the smart management just one person in charge will be enough for the process monitoring and control.

The completion of the new nitrogen plant is scheduled for the year 2020.
