Nitrogen content reduction in natural and other hydrocarbon gases without using cryogenic solutions. In a single-stage design, nitrogen content is reduced twice as much. Complex configurations with recycles are most commonly used (to reduce the target component losses). Membranes with a reverse permeability sequence are used with permeate as target stream.

The principle of membrane separation of a gas mixture is based on the different penetration rates of its components through a polymeric membrane due to the differential partial pressures of the gas on either side of the membrane.
